As a psychologist and former patient with extensive experience of the health sector, Kathy Torpie offers a unique perspective of health care that is based on both professional and personal experience. It is a perspective that few other speakers can offer. Using specific examples from her own story, Kathy demonstrates in a personal way the potentially powerful impact – both positive and negative - that the clinician/patient relationship can have on important clinical outcomes and on the satisfaction of clinicians and patients alike. Speaking as a psychologist and making an important distinction between “patient centred care” and “relationship centred care”, she demonstrates the critically important role that interpersonal and communication skills play in relationships throughout the health system and the impact that has on the system as a whole. Backed by medical literature, she argues forcefully that excellent interpersonal and communication skills are not soft options, but rather core competencies essential to the success of every other standard of quality that we currently pursue - clinical, financial, operational and personal. |
